Administering a GLP-1 medication injection from a vial with a 31G syringe is straightforward and can be done at home. Follow these steps to ensure safe and effective administration:

1. Prepare for the Injection

  • Choose the Right Time: GLP-1 medications are usually taken once a week on the same day. Pick a day that fits your schedule.

  • Wash Your Hands: Clean hands are essential to prevent infection.

  • Gather Supplies: You’ll need:

    • Your medication vial

    • A 31G syringe (new and sterile)

    • An alcohol swab

    • A sharps disposal container

2. Draw the Medication into the Syringe

  1. Inspect the Vial:

    • Ensure the medication is clear and free of particles. Do not use it if it appears cloudy or discolored.

  2. Clean the Vial:

    • Wipe the rubber stopper of the vial with an alcohol swab and let it dry.

  3. Prepare the Syringe:

    • Remove the syringe cap, being careful not to touch the needle.

    • Pull back the plunger to draw air into the syringe equal to your prescribed dose.

  4. Insert the Needle:

    • Insert the needle into the vial through the rubber stopper.

    • Push the air from the syringe into the vial (this helps create pressure to make drawing the medication easier).

  5. Draw the Medication:

    • Turn the vial upside down with the needle still inside.

    • Slowly pull back the plunger to draw your prescribed dose into the syringe.

    • Check for air bubbles in the syringe. If you see bubbles, gently tap the syringe and push the air out before rechecking the dose.

3. Select the Injection Site

  • Common Sites:

    • Front of your thighs

    • Lower abdomen (at least 2 inches away from the belly button)

    • Back of your upper arm (if someone assists you)

  • Rotate injection sites each week to prevent irritation.

4. Administer the Injection

  1. Clean the Injection Site:

    • Wipe the chosen site with an alcohol swab and let it dry.

  2. Pinch the Skin:

    • Gently pinch the skin at the injection site.

  3. Insert the Needle:

    • Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle (straight in) into the skin.

  4. Inject the Medication:

    • Slowly push the plunger to inject the medication.

    • Hold the needle in place for a few seconds to ensure the full dose is delivered.

  5. Remove the Needle:

    • Carefully withdraw the needle and release the pinched skin.

5. Dispose of the Syringe

  • Immediately place the used syringe into a sharps disposal container. Never reuse syringes or needles.

6. Store the Vial

  • Recap the vial and store it according to the medication’s instructions (typically refrigerated).

Tips for a Comfortable Injection

  • Let the medication warm to room temperature for a few minutes if it has been refrigerated.

  • Use a new syringe and needle for every injection to reduce discomfort and ensure sterility.

  • Relax your muscles and breathe deeply to make the process smoother.
